Mentoplasty is a procedure which targets the reduction or augmentation of the size of the chin to create a more harmonic profile.
Additive mentoplasty aims at giving volume to a drooping chin or to a receded chin which does not harmonize with the facial lines.
When dealing with an overly receded chin the procedure entails the insertion of a mesh in the pocket created within, and under the lower lip. This creates the necessary volume to give the suitable roundness to the subject’s profile.
Additive mentoplasty performed by Dr. Rubens Mattioli targets the creation of natural volume which is stable in time, thanks to the insertion of a mesh composed of strips, used also in surgery treating abdominal and inguinal hernias, and is thus a material compatible with the tissues.
The procedure entails the incision done at the mucus of the lower lip, from where a pocket is created by draining the periosteum of the jaw bone. This pocket is filled with the mesh used also in hernia surgery and the amount used is proportional to the volume desired. This type of procedure is preferable compared to the traditional type of procedure which, for other motives, entails the insertion of a silicon prosthesis.
- the silicon prosthesis is difficult to introduce due to its dimensions and also because of this requires a bigger incision.
- the prosthesis is available only in standard models with three sizes: small, medium and large; this limitation, however, is a hindrance to the personalization of the chin, which has to be modeled in proportion with the facial lines;
- in the medium-long term, the silicon prosthesis may shift about, given that it lies on a bone surface that is not flat. This may cause a worsening of facial harmony compared to the original situation;
- the prosthesis is a solid material and therefore difficult to lay on the chin’s bony part. With time, a reabsorption of the bone may occur and cause pain in the lower incisors.
All these discomforts are removed through the use of a specific mesh that can reach the desired volume and chin’s curve and protrusion. Moreover, the mesh used for additive mentoplasty procedures cannot move about inasmuch as with time, it is invaded by the cicatricial tissue which prevents it from shifting.
