Functional and reconstructive nose surgery

Functional surgery of the nose targets the return to normal breathing functions, correcting those pathologies such as hypertrophy of the turbinates, deformity/deviations of the nasal septum and/or nasal pyramid, nasal valve dysfunctions, polyps of the nose or of the sinuses, and perforation of the nasal septum, that are the basis of nasal obstruction (clogged nose).

The approach to functional surgery
The modern approach to functional surgery is called septorhinoplasty and precisely entails the simultaneous correction of problems related to the wall of the nasal septum as well as that of the turbinates and those that concern the nasal pyramid on the whole (distorted or humped nasal pyramid).

The surgeon’s analysis is based on different parameters: firstly, the possible functional deficits, i.e. respiratory disorders caused by the shape of the nose, nasal pyramid and septum, possibly combined with hypertrophy of the turbinates that may hinder good air ventilation (at times the deficit may be caused by a trauma instead of congenital alterations); secondly, on the basis of exact parameters of proportion, whereby the aesthetic shape of the nose is studied, according to that which most harmonizes with the patient’s facial contours.

Should an aesthetic remodeling of the nose be also recommended, then a remodeling of the tip of the nose is taken into consideration to correct the structural wing cartilage of the nose and support and define the shape of the nose tip itself (cosmetic septorhinoplasty).

Thanks to modern anesthetic and surgical techniques, many plastic surgery interventions are performed in Day Hospital (out-patient regimen and discharge in the afternoon of the same day), to the patient’s great comfort also in view of the fact that since pads are not used there are no postoperative dressings to be removed subsequently.
